A graduate of Bowdoin College with a degree in Visual Arts, Kristen Ambrosi refined her aesthetic sensibility through early positions in magazine publishing and in marketing for an architectural design firm. A lifelong passion for the creative process and fluency with realism established the foundation from which Kristen now leans into abstraction. Formal training paired with organic exploration inspire and inform Kristen’s current work - themes of fluidity and freedom celebrating color and calm.
Kristen explores the oscillation between deliberate choices and relinquished control, and the dialogue between hand and heart, image and eye. She incorporates scripted words, draws linear marks into soft masses, and uses breath to direct the paths of dripped paint.
Energetic qualities of vibrancy and stillness are developed by repeatedly rotating canvases while considering composition, contrast, and the emotional impact of juxtaposed hues. Resonant abstractions emerge through layering, guided by a sense of integration and balance.
As a contemplative painter of contemporary art, Kristen focuses on creating both commissions and collections. The commission process is individualized and collaborative, incorporating design elements and inviting client feedback as layers emerge. Collections till the artist’s internal landscape and communicate through visual language what arises from that ongoing inquiry.
Following intuition from blank canvas to signed piece is a bold place from which to be working and an abiding invitation to dance with uncertainty and cultivate equanimity. Permission to pause and to pivot are guiding principles as Kristen navigates the language of the liminal from creative endeavor to life journey. Searching always for meaning and metaphor, Kristen approaches each canvas with interest and intent, moving gently towards the places where everything feels unresolved, and striving for the satisfaction and peace that comes from bringing a piece to harmony.
Raised and educated in New England, Kristen lived in NYC and NJ for two decades. She now lives in Connecticut between the woods and the water.
