The process an artist uses when creating art is usually an intriguing mystery. Many artists deliberately conceal their techniques and trade secrets. Old Saybrook artist Judy Perry generously invites insight into her thoughts and the steps of creation in her new exhibit of original art. The show entitled “She is Water: Healing Sources, Healing Forces” opens September 21, 2019.

Pairing paintings of women’s faces, exquisitely rendered in an inventive method using watercolor and gesso, with multimedia works of water images, Perry connects two of her favorite inspirations. Perry shares, “I am drawn to women’s faces that have been lived in, the lines on their faces tell the stories of their lives. I find these faces compelling, healing, beautiful and therefore deserving of celebration.” Likening the creases in the face fully lived in to the lines carved in Mother Earth by rivers and streams Perry’s art compels the viewer to consider the story as well as the artistry.

While preparing the collection of works for the exhibit, Perry realized that her stages of creation visually reflect the steps of her personal healing journey. The revelation will be the topic of her artist talk on September 29, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to consider their own healing processes and recognize the similarities to the steps of sketching, abstraction of form, consideration of color and value and finally realization of both reality and vision.

On Sunday, October 13 at 4:00 p.m., poets from the Connecticut River Poets and Guilford Poets Guild will be creating poems based on the works in Judy’s show.
