To reflect on the Jesus of the Gospels is to reflect on paradox, mystery, wonder, and messiness. It is to find God in the shadows, the tensions, and the ambiguities of life. Join returning Mercy by the Sea Presenter Debie Thomas for this virtual two-hour retreat as she draws on her new book, Into the Mess and Other Jesus Stories (Cascade Books, 2022), to consider the Incarnate God who loves us in all of our untidiness. What might the Gospels' "Jesus stories" offer us as we face life's messes, both personal and communal?  How can we translate the words and actions of Jesus into our own complicated experiences of life on earth as it is?  Through teaching, meditation, small group and guided conversation, we will consider these questions together.

Debie Thomas is the author of Into the Mess and Other Jesus Stories, and a columnist and contributing editor for The Christian Century. She also serves as the Minister of Lifelong Formation at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Palo Alto, CA. Debie enjoys leading retreats on scripture, Christian formation, and spiritual writing.
