Spiritual Direction

“Although spiritual direction has been described in many ways,
from my perspective, telling the unique story of God and self-telling
one’s sacred tale is the central activity that occurs in spiritual direction.”
Janet Ruffing, RSM, Ph.D.

What Is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is a way to grow a personal relationship with your God through learning to discern, notice and savor the movements of the Spirit as expressed in everyday life, prayer, meditation and relationships. It requires attentiveness to the moment and listening with the heart to the gentle stirrings deep within.

The critical element in spiritual direction is a desire to actively seek God and to wait for God’s response.

Seeking Spiritual Direction

Mercy by the Sea offers spiritual direction through our network of trained and experienced spiritual directors.

Typically, one meets with a spiritual director once per month for an hour. Fees are on a sliding scale, generally between $35 and $75 per session.

If you would like to receive a referral for a spiritual director on our list, please contact Barbara Giehl, RSM. The Spiritual Directors International website has additional resources to assist your search.
