Spirit and Soil: Planting and Nurturing Companionship

In the Farmer’s Almanac, there is a list of companion plants. As the title suggests, these are plants that should be placed next to each other in the garden because they are mutually beneficial. It makes sense that as gardeners we would seek to create a growing environment that promotes healthy soil and a bountiful harvest. So why don't we apply the same principles to the soil of our soul and the garden of friendship? Here are some examples:

Shade Regulation
Large plants provide shade for smaller plants in need of protection from the sun.
Who shelters us and provides refuge from the harshness of life?

Natural Supports
Tall plants like corn and sunflowers can support low-growing, sprawling crops such as cucumbers and peas.
Who supports us in our efforts to learn and grow?

Improved Plant Health
When one plant absorbs certain substances from the soil, it may change the soil biochemistry in favor of nearby plants.
Who helps us maintain balance by absorbing and displacing that which is not necessary in our lives?

Healthy Soil
Crops, such as bean and peas, help to make nitrogen available. Similarly, plants with long taproots, like burdock, bring up nutrients from deep in the soil, enriching the topsoil to the benefit of shallow-rooted plants.
Who generously shares their spiritual gifts with us?

 Weed Suppression
Planting sprawling crops like potatoes with upright plants minimizes open areas, where weeds typically take hold.
Who fills our life with beauty so that unhealthy patterns and thoughts don't take root?
