Time and Talents

Become Part of the Mercy Community

Every day, Mercy by the Sea welcomes people seeking rest, reflection, healing, and connection. Our volunteers play an important role in creating that welcoming experience.

Whether you're greeting retreat guests, tending our beautiful gardens, assisting at special events, or sharing your professional skills, your time and talents help extend Mercy's mission of hospitality, compassion, and service.

If you're looking for a meaningful way to give back while becoming part of a caring community, we'd love to welcome you.

Why Volunteer?

Volunteering at Mercy by the Sea is more than lending a helping hand, it's an opportunity to be part of a place where kindness, peace, and community come together. Every act of service, no matter how small, helps create an environment where guests can rest, reflect, and renew.

Many of our volunteers tell us they receive as much as they give. They enjoy meeting new people, spending time in our beautiful shoreline setting, developing lasting friendships, and knowing their efforts make a meaningful difference for everyone who visits.

Whether you have a few hours each month or are looking for a regular volunteer opportunity, we invite you to share your unique gifts and become part of the Mercy by the Sea community.

Volunteer Stories

“Mercy by the Sea is not only a beautiful place to garden, but the volunteer gardening program is a great opportunity to use and improve your gardening skills and to get to know other gardeners. The group here is very nice.”

“When driving through the entrance, I always get what Sister Anne describes as a feeling of coming home. I feel so connected, so welcomed. I feel I’ve found my community.”

“As soon as I step out of my car, I hear the birds and look out at Long Island Sound, the gardens and the people. It’s such a beautiful atmosphere,” says Joan.  “Since I’ve started, my heart rate and blood pressure are lower,” says the former nurse. “I’m very grateful to be volunteering here.

“I like the location, the peace and quiet and what Mercy stands for,” says Anneke. “And volunteering at Mercy by the Sea makes you feel good to do something for the community.

For anyone considering volunteering, Annette’s advice is simple: come see for yourself. Whether it’s gardening on the grounds or helping inside, there’s a place for everyone. “There are just so many places where volunteers are needed.”

“I drive here in honking traffic, then, when I arrive, it’s completely quiet,” Ryan, an intern from Yale Divinity School says. “When I go home, it doesn’t feel like I need to unwind. I’m already at ease.”
“The quiet spaces away from technology, the reverence and silence – these things require you to disconnect.”
