Seed catalogues begin to arrive this month. Perusing the pages on a winter day brings comfort. This human need to be connected to creation will not go unmet even when the land seems to slumber, preferring a hard frozen blanket of earth to the soft caress of the gardener’s hands.

Soil and Spirit: Seed CataloguesCreation turns a cold shoulder, casts a chilling glance, and seems to say “leave me alone.” I’m not deceived nor am I discouraged. I know life pulsates beneath the glare of this harsh afternoon light reflecting off the snow. The pages in the seed catalogue reveal the shapes and colors that will burst forward on a spring day with a flirtatious grin, as if to say, “I knew you would wait because you love me so.”

Join the Mercy Center Garden team over the next few months as we share the story of selecting and sowing seeds for both the vegetable and new pollinator garden. So far we have fallen in love with:

  • Gloriosa Double Daisy
  • Strawberry Blonde Sunflower
  • Uproar Rose and Queen Lime with blush Zinnias
