Print and Online Spiritual Resources

Many of you who come to Mercy by the Sea see us as a unique, contemplative, restorative and transformative resource that helps you along your spiritual journey. But there are many other spiritual resources that can inspire you in between your visits.  Here is a list of old favorites, like The Sun and Tikkun, and some valuable new finds like Anchor magazine and Relief.  Check them out and see which one or ones speak to your heart.

 Anchor Magazine:  where spirituality and social justice meet
Published by Still Harbor, a nonprofit organization with the tagline “Chaplains for Social Justice,” this biannual magazine aims to bring together diverse spiritual voices to stimulate a “different kind of conversation about equity, peace and healing.”

Image is quarterly journal that defines itself as “a unique forum for the best writing and artwork informed by — or that grapple with — religious faith.” Past contributors who have appeared in the journal include Robert Coles, Annie Dillard, John Irving, Kathleen Norris, Mary Oliver, Ann Patchett and Elie Wiesel, among many others.

Orion Magazine
Founded in 1982, Orion “invites readers into a community of caring for the planet.” The articles, essay and art work presented all explore the relationship between nature and culture.  Orion seeks “to inspire new thinking about how humanity might live on Earth justly, sustainably and joyously.”

The Other Journal
The Other Journal positions its content at “the intersection of theology and culture.”  Although it focuses primarily on the Christian tradition, it also invites dialogue with those who are interested in exploring the relationship of faith and spirituality in the world.

Pilgrim: A Journal of Catholic Experience
Launched in New Haven, Connecticut, in spring 2009, Pilgrim seeks to “explore what it means to sustain a Catholic identity and live Christianity holistically in today’s world.”

Relief
This journal has both a print publication and online presence.  Its tagline, “A Journal of Art and Faith” conveys its mission to explore life through artistic, faith and literary expression. Its weekly blog written by different writers offers up reflections and meditations on the world through the lenses of art and faith.

The Sun
For over 40 years, this ad-free magazine has published articles, essays, short stories, interviews, poetry and photographs that celebrate life in all its complexity.

Tikkun
Tikkun’s tagline reflects its mission “to heal, repair and transform the world.”  Founded by Rabbi Michael Lerner, the magazine brings together diverse spiritual and religious voices to engage conversation about social, political and economic transformation.

The Wayfarer
The Wayfarer
is the biannual literary publication of Homebound Publications, an independent publisher of contemplative writing, art and photography. The magazine works to bring together a community of contemplative voices, with the expressed purpose of effecting cultural transformation.
