Speaking of Loss and Grief

No one can truly understand what it feels like inside our broken hearts. Our unique experiences are shaped by personality, family background and the circumstances of our loss. At the same time, grief is a universal human experience. Just as we all know love, we all know the devastation of loss. This shared journey of recovery known as grief leads us through our loss. It is our ally, actually, as we weave our way toward healing.

Conscious grieving is a participatory experience. Instead of waiting for time to heal our wounds or depending upon childhood patterns of grieving, we learn to engage our feelings and fears in creative ways. We seek help or carve out solitude or find new ways to express ourselves. We open our hearts to the possibility of hope, even in the midst of pain, and make space for light to come into the darkness of loss. We discover love, once again.

Lisa Irish’s book, Grieving – the Sacred Art: Hope in the Land of Loss, will be released by Skylight Paths and Turner Publishing April 3, 2018.
